Arguably, with such incentives offered – both financial and personal – the teleradiology field is quickly becoming an employer of choice. And, teleradiologists can also rest assured that the outlook of their profession is anything but bleak.

Following the release of the annual compensation survey from Martin, Fletcher, cries of woe were heard from darkened rooms across the land.

“How am I supposed to live on a lousy $8,000 dollars per week?” was one of the more temperate responses we got to the revelation that radiologists are only the second-highest paid specialty, averaging $425,000 per year.

“Those invasive cardiology bastards shouldn’t be number one” snarled another heartbroken radiologist, who wanted to remain anonymous while he sat on the beach in the Virgin Islands.

Radiology the second-highest paid specialty

Martin, Fletcher, a leading national healthcare recruiting and consultancy firm, released the results of both its annual physician compensation survey and combined nursing and allied health industry trends and benefits report today. Gathering data from more than 2,000 healthcare organizations across the nation that encompass more than 35 physician, nurse and allied health specialties, Martin, Fletcher’s studies have identified key compensation and benefits trends that point to elevated turnover rates at hospitals, and an exodus to group practices.

MedGadget makes note of an article by Dr. Robert Steinbrook that pretty accurately sums up the pros - and cons - of teleradiology:

Radiology + The Internets = Teleradiology

The rapid expansion of teleradiology will benefit other physicians and their patients if it improves the quality, availability, and timeliness of interpretations. More specialty radiologists may be available to read more specialty studies. Many hospitals, including small and rural facilities, may be able to improve the quality of their radiology services.

Those who are exclusively teleradiologists will have no contact with patients. Radiologists at a remote site cannot perform vascular and other interventional procedures, ultrasonography, or fluoroscopic studies. They will also have less contact with other doctors, or even with other radiologists, particularly if they read from home rather than from a central facility.

He’s identified many of the key discussions taking place amongst the teleradiologists right now.

An editorial in the current Medical Journal of Australia addresses the roles of team members in diagnostic imaging. They question the push towards image reporting by non-medical practitioners. Obviously, there’s a fair degree of turf-protection going on here, but their concerns seem well-founded.

Addressing radiology workforce issues

Radiologist workloads are heavy and increasing.6 In addition to the general growth of medical services, traditional history taking and clinical examination are increasingly supplemented by and dependent on multiple and more complex DI to provide a definitive diagnosis. Expansion of DI is placing workforce pressures on all members of the DI team. Radiographers are also in short supply.

Radiology services have always been provided by a multidisciplinary team, including radiologists and radiographers. The optimal DI outcome is dependent on team members working in a cooperative manner, mutually recognising and maximising individual areas of expertise.

In this case, Stephen Wong has moved physically but he plans to continue his collaboration with Boston colleagues from Houston. It’s only tangentially related to teleradiology, but in so far as technology allows us to work from wherever we please, Wong’s relocation is another sign of the times.

Houston 1, Boston 0 - The Boston Globe

Wong can’t throw a slider, or hit one, either. But until recently he was one of the top scientists, working in one of the hottest fields of research, at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Now Wong is one of the top scientists, working in one of the hottest fields of research, in Houston. “Basically we are in the 21st century. With the advent of the Web, open access to online information, and convenient means of travel, the world is literally flat,” Wong told me from Houston, where he is chief of medical physics and vice chairman of radiology at Methodist Hospital and director of the bioinformatics program at the Methodist Hospital Research Institute.

He took most of his lab with him, about 20 people in all, mostly Asian scientists. “It is as easy to collaborate and do science with people across states as with people next door to you,” he says. “I came across most of my Harvard colleagues more often in outside conferences and meetings than in Boston. No one place can lock into intellectual capital by location alone.”
