India’s President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Friday called for taking advantage of the benefits of digital imaging as a diagnostic tool and of tele-radiology to help the needy in rural areas in a cost-effective manner.

He was speaking during a visit to the digital radiology centre at Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), which is working towards providing low cost digital radiography equipment and electronic medical records systems with tele-radiology facility.

As ultrasound machines become more compact and their image quality more precise, doctors have begun carrying the body-imaging technology to rural U.S. hospitals and developing countries. No longer is ultrasound available only to hospitals with reliable power supplies and room for bulky equipment. The portable battery-operated machines aren’t expected to completely replace standard console-sized units, just as laptop computers haven’t rendered desktop models obsolete. But industry expert Harvey Klein said the compact machines are proving popular among doctors outside the traditional areas of radiology, cardiology and prenatal care.

Malaysia hasn’t yet seen the type of nighthawk radiology boom that India and other countries have had, but this initiative, reported in the The New Straits Times will bring it much closer.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad said the move would not only help patients get the best treatment without having to physically see a specialist but also save on time, travel, cost and bed use.

For a start, teleconsultation, one of the major applications of telemedicine, is being used for five disciplines — radiology, cardiology, dermatology, accident and traumatology and neurosurgery. Put in place by WorldCare Health (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, it also allows for peer-to-peer transmission of film-based radiological images as well as scanned paper documents, voice annotations, digital images and ECG scans.

Dr Abdul Latiff said teleradiology enabled physicians to seek primary and secondary diagnosis of radiological images, such as X-ray films, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and ultrasound imaging.
